In recent years, Lodi Baseball has been one of the most successful sports for Lodi High School and has brought countless regional and conference championships. This year, with lots of young talent on the roster, it looks like the Lodi Baseball team could make another run to defend their 2025 conference championship. With lots of ups and downs, the team has been able to bounce back against several non-conference and conference opponents. Especially against a loaded Capitol North Conference, the team has been able to battle into a three-way tie with both Lake Mills and Waupun at 6-2 at the time of 5/19/26.
Here’s a quick recap of the season so far. As of writing, the team is 15-7. They went on a strong 5-win tear in the beginning of the season, beating Marshall 18-4, Tomah 16-4, Evansville 7-4, Wisconsin Heights 11-3, and Monroe 8-5, before receiving their first loss of the season at home against Waupun 2-4. Then they bounced back to win 3-0 at Waupun the following Thursday, with a huge home run blast coming from Josh Tatro. Friday and Saturday, they played in the Waupun Tournament, going 1-2. They beat West Allis Hale 10-7, but lost to Beloit Turner 3-14, and Hamilton 3-5. The following week, they went on to play Lake Mills, losing at home, but eventually traveled to Lake Mills to beat them in a shutout marked with two home runs, one by Casey Fleischman and one by Josh Tatro. Then came a 4-game win streak, beating Sauk Prairie 4-1, walking off McFarland in a thriller 9-8, and sweeping conference opponent Poynette 9-2 and 5-2 respectively. They lost away games at both Belleville and Cambridge, but came back streaking hot with a walkoff win against #7 Wisconsin Dells (by MaxPreps), sweeping conference rival Columbus, and ending with their latest game coming on Saturday, May 16, 2026 with a 10-run rule of Portage in the 6th inning, 16-6. Next, the team battles Lakeside Lutheran for the decider to a potential conference championship, and then ends the season with a game against Baraboo on Friday and Deerfield on Tuesday.
Leadership has been one of the backbones for this team and it all comes down to some of the team’s leaders. Specifically, senior team captain Alex Breunig has been very successful not only on the field but in leading the team through his experience. When asked what was his favorite moment of the year on the team, he responded with “Beating Lake Mills this year.” This was a very high-stakes moment this year as it helped Lodi equalize the series and stay in the top of the Capitol North-Conference standings. Another thing to note is the help that Alex has had in building the younger groups skills and ability to stay composed during the games through practices and competitions in practice. “Everybody is trying to have fun, we all do a good job at finding ways to keep our energy up at practice and in game” says Alex. More important leaders on the team include Kale Schneider, a junior who plays shortstop, center field, and pitches, Ace Hoffmann, a junior who plays third base, first base, and pitches, and Reece Schreiber, who plays first base and pitches. This group of juniors and seniors has come together to form a standard of culture for the Lodi Varsity Baseball squad which has contributed to their success. Following Deerfield on Tuesday, the team will play on Thursday in the first round of the playoffs against Brodhead/Juda.
Throughout the ups and downs, and all the hard work that the team will put into their playoff run, we can only step back and watch as this team attempts to pull a deep run against some very stacked rosters and experienced squads with such a young chart of guys. Much of the team consists of juniors and sophomores with two seniors with two freshmen. As this team goes on, their dedication and persistence will forever be remembered as they attempt to do the impossible.
