Have you seen the previous movies in the Alien franchise? If you have, you should be excited to know that there is a new movie.
Twenty years before Alien: Romulus, the first alien movie made in 1979 was released, and since then, it has expanded to a franchise with six movies. Eight if you want to count the two alien vs. predator movies and special education teacher, Adam Sheldon. said, “ I really prefer they take another shot at rebooting the Alien vs. Predator movie to connect both franchises.”
The first alien movie begins when crew members, Captain Dallas, Executive Officer Kane, Warrant Officer Ripley, Navigator Lambert, Science Officer Ash, and Engineers Parker and Brett wake up from cryo-sleep due to a distress signal from an unknown planet. They discover an abandoned ship with a dead alien and cocoons and they don’t know what they are until a face hugger lunges and latches to a crew member. Later on, that crew member starts acting weird like he is in pain, in that moment, an alien bursts out of his chest. From there it’s just a do-or-die situation.
The first and latest movies have many differences even down to the directors, Alien 1979 was directed by Ridley Scott who later came back and directed the 5 and 6th movies, Prometheus, and its prequel, Alien: covenant. Alien 1979 made 188 million dollars while Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Álvarez made over 153 million more than that sitting at $341 million.
Now, twenty years after the first movie, Alien: Romulus begins. It starts with the orphaned main character, Rain, and Andy her robot brother, programmed by her late dad to do what’s best for her.
Jackson Star is a mining planet where androids and people are basically at war with one another seeing that the androids are programmed to do what’s best for Weyland Yutani, the company, and humans care about the health of each. At first, Rain finishes her work contract and is expected to leave and go to planet Yvaga with Andy, however, she is denied because the company suddenly changed the number of years people had to work.
Desperate, she decides to go with her ex-boyfriend and his friends, Kay, Navarro, Bjorn, and Tyler the ex to steal a drifting ship and use it for the cryo chambers to get to Yvaga. Before they even leave Bjorn reveals to Andy that he won’t be able to use the chambers because Yvaga doesn’t allow nonhumans in. Nevertheless, Andy does what he is programmed to do and says that as long as rain is safe he will stay behind.
After that, it’s just an all-out war with most of the crew dying to xenomorphs but Rain and Andy make it to the chambers. A lot of the movie is just world-building with a couple of twists but I think the surroundings and actions of the characters give it a nice oomph and keep the watcher entertained. With the budget being 80 million dollars I think it sure shows the effort and skill put into the production of the movie
I think Alien: Romulus was a great movie, just like the others in the Alien franchise and I would highly recommend seeing it. Even English teacher Garit Schmidt says, “I do plan on seeing the movie, but only on streaming.”
