Ever wanted to be behind the camera, on the page, or in front of the mic? Then welcome to Writing for Publication, where creativity meets journalism—and where ideas turn into realities. This isn’t your average English class. Here, you write, edit, design, film, and produce content for the yearbook, the school newspaper, and our very own school broadcast. For everything produced, there is an editor. There is an editor for the yearbook, newspaper, and broadcast and they instruct the class on what they should accomplish.
Writing for Publication is a class where you can experience a lot of growth and be able to express yourself. It is a great class to take to learn important things such as advertising and editing. In the yearbook, you can design the spreads however you want while following a theme. Yearbook Editor, Arrow Schilling says, “I highly recommend this class to any student who wants to learn more about journalism and the art of creating content for the students here at LHS!” In this class, creativity is strongly encouraged and can be a really great class for letting your creativity fly. This class can allow students to learn new skills in writing and creating, which can boost their confidence and education in english.
Along with the yearbook, they also operate the school newspaper, The Devil’s Advocate. They constantly get to interview people around the school on recent and relevant topics, to create exciting newspapers to share. Every person writes 2-3 newspaper articles a semester on any topic that they are interested in. It is a great way to improve writing skills and to build communication skills by setting up interviews. This class allows you to be more formal and sophisticated with your writing, which is a great skill to have. Newspaper Editor, Madeline Deleon says, “Writing for publication is a great class to take, not only just for journalism but for exploration in writing in a formal manner.” This class can really help you with many skills and is an excellent elective to take if you enjoy writing or would like to improve your writing ability.
Lastly, they are also in charge of the school’s broadcast. They create about one broadcast per month and everyone in the class gets involved. People are welcome to share ideas for segments that go into the video, and they can be as creative as you would like. It is super fun to put together a broadcast that everyone in the community can watch and enjoy. There are specific dates set to film and edit the segments to ensure that they are done on time. Broadcast Editor, Jadyn Hellenbrand says, “I encourage anyone thinking about taking this class to go for it, and be willing to try new things like editing segments.” People in this class can teach you how to edit so that you could create a segment however you’d like. The more creative your thinking is, the better. If you like creating and coming up with fun ideas, then this could be the class for you!
The Writing for Publication class puts in a lot of work to put out the best quality work for the school as possible. From designing spreads in the yearbook, to finding fun newspaper topics, and even filming video segments around the school, this class puts out amazing quality work to represent LHS. This class is great for boosting creativity and improving writing and communication skills that will last a lifetime. We hope to see you all next year and make it the best year so far!
