Of course, animals are always a fun surprise but are they really a great present?
Pets require care and attention for their entire lives, which can range from a few years to over a decade, depending on the species. Giving a pet as a gift may not take into account the recipient’s ability or willingness to commit fully.
The person receiving the pet may not be prepared for the responsibilities of pet ownership, including feeding, grooming, exercising, and medical care. If someone is not ready to take on these duties, the pet may be neglected. A Sophomore, Marley Redell, at Lodi High School, says “ In my opinion, I don’t think pets should be present because they require so much, they should be talked through for a long time”
Another issue is overpopulation in shelters. Overpopulation is a major problem in shelters with most animals ending up getting euthanized. If the wrong person gets a pet for Christmas it can lead to unwanted litter or them abandoning their pets if they don’t want them anymore.
However, another Sophomore, Miakya Vang, at Lodi High School, is opposed to this. She says, “As long as they are ready and prepared, I think it is completely okay!” Most people opposed to this
There are of course some good reasons for getting a pet such as Companionship, A Pet does give unconditional love and is a very loyal friend. Pets can offer a sense of comfort you can’t get from another person.
Also, there have been studies where pets have been shown to reduce stress anxiety and just promoting over well-being. If you get an active animal like a dog or an outdoor cat that will get you into physical activity because they will wanna go outside and you will have to take them.
In conclusion, it is really just up to you how you view it all, Animals can both be good and bad gifts!
