As the season comes to an end, excitement and anticipation rise. With thirteen seniors on the team and winning the conference title last year, the team is hoping to win it again. This team has accomplished some major things this season so far such as sweeping Lake Mills 7-0, Waupun 6-1, and Fort Atkinson/Cambridge 4-3.
Following in last year’s footsteps, head coach Joe Birkholz wants to take this year’s team back to the conference title. Entering his 13th year of coaching, Birkholz recalls the time when the position of head coach became his. “Tennis has always been a sport I played and enjoyed, so when the opportunity came and I had that extra time to take on the role, I took it.” Coach Birkholz has also stated how talented his players are and hopes to continue progressing this year.
One of the 13 seniors on the team this year is Gracie Burkholder. This is her first year on the team and she says, “I enjoy the positive atmosphere and how helpful the coaches are with individual skills.” This season, Gracie said she faced more challenges with her skills but has progressed with the help of the coaches. Gracie is proud of her team and is excited to see her team advance.
Another senior is Tessa Pertzborn. This is her fourth year of playing and says her favorite part is the people. “Over the last four years, I’ve made some friends I probably wouldn’t otherwise have,” said Pertzborn. Pertzborn has also said the toughest thing this season is knowing it’s her last. When asked about this current season she says it’s been very fun and successful and can’t wait for the rest of the season.
As the season is coming to an end, the team has been very successful. With many victories and major accomplishments in singles and doubles, let’s cheer them on as they finish their season!
